Frequently Asked Questions

What is ubtan and why is it used in Ayurvedic skincare?

Ubtan (from the Sanskrit word Udvartana) is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal paste used in daily and seasonal self-care rituals. This age-old practice involves gently massaging the skin with a nutrient-rich blend of natural powders and herbs in upward, circular motions.

Traditionally used in place of soap, Ubtan helps support the skin's natural cleansing process, exfoliates surface impurities, and promotes a soft, refreshed texture. The gentle massage technique is believed to help support normal circulation and leave the skin feeling smooth, toned, and revitalised.

What are the key ingredients and their specific benefits?

This Ayurvedic Ubtan combines time-honoured herbs and minerals, each chosen for their traditional role in supporting the skin's natural balance and radiance:

Sandalwood Powder (2%) - Traditionally used to help support calm, refreshed skin and a naturally even tone.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa, 5%) - Celebrated in Ayurveda for helping support the skin's natural glow and clarity through its warming and balancing qualities.

Multani Mitti (Fuller's Earth/Bentonite Clay) - Known for its naturally absorbent nature, traditionally used to help support clear, smooth skin and a balanced complexion.

Neem (Azadirachta indica, 5%) - Valued for helping support the skin's normal cleansing processes and maintaining its natural harmony.

Chickpea Flour, Lentils, Barley Meal, Fennel & Bitter Orange Peel - A traditional blend that helps provide gentle exfoliation, leaving the skin feeling refreshed and polished.

Together, these natural ingredients form a gentle herbal exfoliant that supports soft, radiant, and balanced skin-honouring the centuries-old Ayurvedic ritual of Udvartana (herbal body polishing).

How should I use this ubtan pack for best results?

Prepare the paste: Mix 1-2 teaspoons of the Ubtan powder with your preferred liquid-such as water, milk, yoghurt, or rose water-and let it sit for about 15 minutes to form a smooth, thick paste.

Apply: Spread evenly over the body or face and leave on for 20-30 minutes.

Massage: When the paste is partially dry, gently massage the skin in upward, circular motions using your palms. This traditional polishing technique helps support gentle exfoliation and skin renewal.

Rinse: Wash off with lukewarm water, followed by a cool splash. Pat dry gently.

Use twice weekly as part of your Ayurvedic self-care ritual. Avoid contact with eyes.
Each 65 g pack provides multiple applications for naturally refreshed and radiant skin.

Can I use ubtan daily or will it dry out my skin?

Ubtans are traditionally considered gentle, but daily use is not generally recommended. Because the paste involves mild exfoliation through herbal powders, overuse may feel drying for some skin types. For most people, using Ubtan two to three times per week provides the right balance between cleansing and nourishment.

The natural ingredients-such as chickpea flour, turmeric, and sandalwood-are traditionally valued for helping support the skin's normal cleansing and toning process. Those with very dry or sensitive skin may prefer to apply it less frequently or add moisturising ingredients like milk or yoghurt when preparing the paste.

As with any natural product, perform a patch test before first use by applying a small amount on the inner arm or behind the elbow for 15 minutes to check for sensitivity.

Is this suitable for face and body or just body?

Yes, this traditional Ubtan blend is suitable for both face and body care. It's formulated with gentle, natural ingredients that help support the skin's normal cleansing, toning, and renewal processes.

For the face, apply a smaller amount of paste using light, circular motions-avoiding the delicate eye area-to help support a smooth, refreshed complexion.

For the body, use broader, upward strokes during massage, focusing on areas like the elbows, knees, and ankles for gentle exfoliation and polishing.

This Ubtan can be used as a natural alternative to soap, helping support the skin's softness, balance, and natural glow from head to toe.
