Ancient civilisations discovered the magic of indigo millennia ago. Indigofera tinctoria (true indigo) produce this remarkable blue/purple pigment that transformed textile arts across cultures.

Unlike synthetic dyes, natural indigo contains no harsh chemicals or metallic salts. When used on hair, it creates rich blue-black tones.  Indigo Powder is cherished not only for its ability to impart a rich, natural hair colour, but also for its role as an effective hair conditioner.

For a deep, dark brown shade, Indigo pairs beautifully with Henna. When applied together, these two natural ingredients create a vibrant, chemical-free hair colour, a traditional alternative to synthetic dyes.

How To Use

For Quality Black Colour Hair - Henna + Indigo Instructions:

Step 1: Take 2 tablespoons of henna powder (adjust quantity based on hair length/thickness).
Mix it with warm water in a non-metallic bowl to form a smooth paste. The consistency should be (slightly thinner than yogurt)—wet but not runny.
Let the henna paste sit overnight (6-8 hours) to allow the dye to release. You’ll notice a brownish layer on top when it’s ready.

Step 2: Right before application, mix 4 Tbsp indigo powder with the henna paste and add a little warm water. Stir until it forms a smooth paste (slightly thinner than yogurt).

Indigo must be used immediately after mixing, as it loses potency if left sitting.

Step 3: Apply the paste evenly to your hair, focusing on grey areas or the sections you want to dye.
Coat all strands thoroughly, working from roots to tips.
Cover your hair with plastic wrap or a shower cap and leave it on for 2 hours min. Then wash with normal water.

Note: Avoid shampoo or oil for 24-48 hours to let the colour settle.

Fantastic product. I am using Ashwagandha in my final weeks of pregnancy and have had great results. Stress doesn't bring me down as much, I have more energy and feel stronger now at 38weeks pregnant then I did at 36 weeks. I use a teaspoon a day in my warm milk with other safe herbs and spices including the Shatavari powder I brought :)

FAQs

Indigo powder is made from leaves of the indigo plant (Indigofera tinctoria) that are harvested, dried, and then ground into a powder rich in natural indigo pigments. This 100% USDA Certified Organic Indigo Powder creates rich blue-black tones when used on hair. Ancient civilisations discovered the magic of indigo millennia ago, with true indigo producing a remarkable blue/purple pigment that transformed textile arts across cultures. Unlike synthetic dyes, natural indigo contains no harsh chemicals or metallic salts. When applied together with henna, these two natural ingredients create a vibrant, chemical-free hair colour - a traditional alternative to synthetic dyes. For a deep, dark brown shade, indigo pairs beautifully with henna. The powder is grown in India, non-GMO, not tested on animals, with no fillers, no binders, and no common allergens. 100% plant-based, gluten-free, and GMP certified.

Indigo is particularly effective in covering grey hair by penetrating the hair shaft and binding to the keratin. However, indigo does not reverse greying but masks grey hair by naturally dyeing it a deep blue or black shade when used after henna. When used with henna, indigo creates a range of shades from brown to black. The mixing ratios determine the final colour: for reddish brown use 70% henna/30% indigo, for brown use equal parts (50/50), and for dark brown to black use 70% indigo/30% henna. Indigo must always be used in a two-step process with henna for best results, especially when achieving darker shades. It supports grey hair coverage whilst also supporting hair growth, nourishing dry hair, and supporting overall hair health. Regular use creates progressively deeper, richer tones.

Beyond colouring, Indigo Powder is cherished as an effective hair conditioner. Natural compounds like antioxidants and plant proteins provide nourishment whilst sealing cuticles, smoothing the hair shaft, and enhancing shine. It has been traditionally used to promote hair growth by stimulating follicles, improving blood circulation to the scalp, and strengthening roots. The powder serves as a natural, chemical-free alternative to synthetic hair dyes, free from harmful chemicals like ammonia, peroxide, and parabens. It can prevent premature greying, add shine and smoothness to hair, and improve overall scalp circulation - supporting healthier hair growth over time. The conditioning benefits make hair more manageable whilst the colouring effects provide coverage. Can be used on all hair types including curly, straight, and textured hair.

Follow the henna + indigo instructions: Step 1 - Prepare henna paste with 2 tablespoons henna powder and warm water, let sit overnight (6-8 hours). Step 2 - RIGHT BEFORE APPLICATION, mix 4 tablespoons indigo powder with the henna paste and add warm water to form smooth paste (slightly thinner than yoghurt). IMPORTANT: Indigo must be used immediately after mixing as it loses potency if left sitting - this is crucial for colour development. Step 3 - Apply paste evenly to hair, focusing on grey areas. Coat all strands thoroughly from roots to tips. Cover with plastic wrap or shower cap and leave for 2 hours minimum. Wash with normal water. Note: Avoid shampoo or oil for 24-48 hours to let colour settle. Warm water activates indigo, and adding salt (optional) enhances dye release and adherence. Always mix in non-metallic bowl.

It is advisable to do a strand test before applying indigo powder to your entire hair and scalp. Select a one-inch section of your hair and apply the indigo mixture to it to see what colour it may leave - this is crucial as colour can vary based on your natural hair colour and condition. IMPORTANT: After you have used indigo, do not use any bleaching hair products for 6 weeks minimum, as this can cause unpredictable colour reactions and damage. Do a patch test on skin (behind ear or inner elbow) to check for allergies before full application. The powder should be stored in the 1kg brown paper bag in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Best Before: Jan 2027. Indigo works best when hair is not chemically treated. If you have previously used chemical dyes, wait 2-3 months before using indigo or consult a professional.
